疫情下的大學展覽廳 The University Gallery during the COVID-19 Pandemic

受到新冠肺炎疫情影響，2020年初至今，大學展覽廳的開放模式也因而有所改變。為控制人流，確保社交距離，訪客均需預約參觀。為提供更清潔及安全的環境，參觀人士在登記參觀時，需要申報過去十四的健康狀況；進入展覽廳時均需量度體溫；展廳大門備有消毒地墊，不同位置設有消毒搓手液機，供參觀者使用。此外，所有互動展品均定時消毒；展覽範圍均應用抗病毒塗層，提供長效消毒和抗菌保護，保障參觀者健康。

大學展覽廳也藉著這段時期，更新部份展出內容，包括之前介紹的新展品1964年的賀函，還有展區D介紹大學近年主要研究計劃的輕觸式屏幕互動內容、諾貝爾學人精選講座重溫宣傳片等。除展品内容更新外，展廳硬件也進行提升工程，如改善展櫃燈光，使展品得到更佳保護；地下一層墻壁展櫃翻新及地板改善工程，以防雨水滲入造成蟲蛀問題。這些維護工程都為參觀者提供更好的體驗。

大學檔案繼續向各部門徵集歷史文獻，同時也推出1963-2019年校園地圖數碼館藏，並因應疫情對校園生活的影響，推出中大抗疫記事徵集，計劃藉此記錄中大人在對抗新型冠狀病毒期間的經歷，建構校園抗疫的集體記憶。期望各位老師、學生、職員和校友分享這段期間的照片、文字等，記錄在這段期間的體驗或校園生活受到的影響。

走過充滿挑戰的2020年，2021即將到臨，祝願大家來年身心康泰、生活充實！

Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus in January, the University Gallery has imposed preventive measures to ensure safety of visitors. In order to maintain social distancing, Gallery visits are by appointment only. All visitors are required to declare their health status for the past 14 days. Visitors entering the gallery are subject to body temperature check. Disinfection floor mat is placed at the entrance and hand sanitizer is provided at different areas inside the Gallery. Regular cleaning is applied to all interactive touch panels. Spray of anti-microbial coating is arranged to prevent microbial contamination and provide long-lasting protection.

Some display items have been replaced and new contents are added during this period. These included update of University outstanding research projects on the touch screen display, video clips of the "Revisiting the Nobel Laureates Lectures" series, and "Congratulatory Messages of 1964" which is introduced in our October blog post. In addition to new contents, there are also refurbishment works to maintain a suitable environment for exhibits and to enhance visitors' experience, such as replacement of lighting of display cabinets and installment of new wall display cases and flooring on the LG/F.

In addition to collecting historical files from different units, the University Archives has also scanned and turned campus maps of 1963-2009 into digital format. As mentioned in August blog post, they are available at the University Archives Digital Collection. Facing the pandemic, a campus-wide project "Contribute to COVID-19 CUHK Community Archive" is launched. The project encourages CUHK students, faculty, staff and alumni to document their personal experiences during the COVID-19 outbreak and contribute them to the University Archives for future study or research.

1964年的賀函 Congratulatory Messages of 1964

中文大學首任校長就職及第一届頒發榮譽學位典禮，於1964年9月9日舉行。據校刊（第一卷第三期）記載，海外各國大學的代表紛紛到來祝賀，當中包括歷史悠久的牛津大學、哈佛大學、麥基爾大學，亞洲區的西貢大學、馬來亞大學等。

大學檔案早前從傳訊及公共關係處接收到一批關於李卓敏校長就職典禮的檔案，當中包括來自各方的祝賀文書，部份藏品正在大學展覽廳展出，供有興趣人士一睹原件及其內文。

形形色色的賀函中，包括普林斯頓大學及哥倫比亞大學的拉丁文祝賀函；京都大學的手繪賀卡；耶魯大學秘書長Reuben A. Holden賀函委派耶魯大學香港校友會會長Heyward Isham出席典禮；牛津大學副校長的來函，更提及希望中大能夠協助英國的中文教學發展；西貢大學代校長范表心教授於典禮後，利用文華酒店信箋撰寫謝函，感謝邀請出席就職典禮。除了這些高等學府的祝賀外，與中大關係密切的雅禮協會Sidney Lovett，也從美國康乃狄克州發送電報祝福；還有香港培英中學校長溫金銘先生，親題賀辭祝賀廣州培英中學校友李卓敏博士成爲中文大學的首任校長。

這些信函，飄洋過海，五十多年前來到中文大學，今天由大學檔案保存並與大家分享。未知遠在耶魯大學的檔案庫，會否找到Reuben A. Holden或Sidney Lovett的賀函初稿，甚或李卓敏校長的回信呢？

The Installation of the First Vice-Chancellor and Conferment of Honorary Degrees Ceremony was held on 9 September 1964. We learned from the University Bulletin (vol. 1, no. 3) that overseas institutes, including Oxford University, Harvard University, McGill University, University of Saigon and University of Malaya, etc. sent their delegates to attend the ceremony.

Recently, Communications and Public Relations Office transferred a batch of archival records to the University Archives. They included documents about the installation ceremony. Congratulatory messages were found among these historical materials. These original messages are now on display in the University Gallery.

Among these precious items, there are greetings in Latin from the Princeton University and University of Columbia and a hand-painted card from Kyoto University. A letter signed by the Secretary of Yale University, Reuben A. Holden, showed that President of the Yale Club of Hong Kong was appointed to attend the ceremony. Pro-Vice-Chancellor of University of Oxford stated the wish to solicit support from CUHK in the teaching in Chinese. Thank you note from the Acting President of University of Saigon was written on a sheet of Mandarin Hotel letter headed paper. In addition, a telegram was sent from Sidney Lovett of Yale in China Association in Connecticut. Principal of Pui Ying Secondary School, Mr. Wan Kam Ming, delivered a handwritten verse to Dr. Li Choh-ming, an alumnus of Pui Ying Middle School in Guangzhou.

These messages travelled across the ocean and arrived CUHK more than 50 years ago. They are now preserved by the University Archives and shared with the public. Wonder if the draft of the messages from Reuben A. Holden or Sidney Lovett, or even the responses of Dr. Li can be found in the Archives at Yale?

校園今昔回顧

1963年8月大學臨時校董會宣佈中大獲得政府撥出與崇基學院毗連，位於馬料水的二百七十英畝土地建校。

然而，翻閲文獻，發現中文大學籌辦初期，政府曾計劃撥出沙田南部一百八十九英畝土地以興建新校舍，設置大學行政部門，容納從九龍和港島搬來的新亞及聯合兩所書院；也有建議位於五哩外馬料水的崇基學院一并遷入，俾有利大學長遠發展。

最後，經過多番斟酌，決定選址馬料水。其實大學校園的規劃，不單涉及各書院的建設計劃、書院與大學發展的配合，當中也要考慮新界區的發展藍圖和交通設施。校園建設初期，剛好政府在大埔籌建船灣淡水湖，而大學正需夷平山地；夷山所得的泥土，便用作興建淡水湖堤壩之用，互惠互利。

《香港中文大學概況》(1968)内的中大地圖，其時崇基已植根馬料水，新亞書院在九龍，聯合書院在港島。
中大的行政單位、研究中心、圖書館則分佈於旺角數座商業大廈。

1979年和1981年的校園地圖：大學講堂和社商樓後來都分別命名；副校長住宅改建為大學賓館；
李達三樓在 1981年落成時與現在的位置也有變動。

2010年規劃中的敬文書院位於伍宜孫書院與和聲書院之間，但最終因地勢因素移至今天的位置。

畢業寄語The end of study, the beginning of lifelong quest for knowledge and experience

今年畢業的同學，也許都會感到遺憾。從農曆新年後，就只能跟老師同學在網上見面，考試過後，這最後一個學期就結束，大學的學業也終結了。再次聚首，也許是在秋天的畢業典禮？或者在畢業宴會上？

中文大學第一次畢業宴會在1964年10月16日舉行，大學檔案存有相關的文獻，包括邀請卡和菜單。宴會設於中環告羅士打大酒家¹，筵開三十席，每席十二道菜。今天大家畢業在即，讓我們重溫當年校長和畢業生代表的致詞內容：
李卓敏校長：「我國人之『畢業』兩字，在文字上，其直接涵義為『某一學科終結』。但事實上，並非如此。反之，却只是為其一生對某一種知識或經騐奮鬥的開始。」
余婉慧同學代表畢業生致辭，建議大學在强調國際化的同時，也培養本地特色，並期待大學學生會及校友會的成立。

七年後，中大第一屆學生會誕生；而由三所原成員書院校友會--即崇基學院校友會、新亞書院校友會及聯合書院校友會--連同教育學院校友會及研究院校友會聯合組成的「香港中文大學校友會聯會」也在1978年成立。

This academic year is coming to the end. If you are final year students, you might probably miss your classmates and your teachers especially during these trying times when face-to-face teaching has been suspended. Any idea when you will meet all of them again after this semester? Would it be during the congregation ceremony or at the graduation dinner when the group gatherings restriction is lifted?

The University Archives has kept documents about the first graduate dinner held on 16 October 1964. The invitation card and menu showed that the dinner was held at the Gloucester Restaurant in Central.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Choh-ming Li, delivered a speech to more than 300 guests and students. He told the graduates that “Graduation in Chinese is ‘pi-yeh’, literally the ‘end of a course or study’ but it is by no means the end of anything but the beginning of a life-long quest for knowledge and experience. “ He said the feeling of being unlearned became stronger as one progressed in his pursuit of knowledge. “The more you learn the more you feel unlearned.”

Miss Yu Yuen Wai, representative of graduates suggested the University to cultivate the local characters of the University along with its international emphasis. She also expressed the hope of the organization of the University Student Union and the immediate establishment of a University Alumni Association.

Years later, the first CUHK Student Union was established in 1971., Then in 1978, the alumni associations of three founding colleges were joined by the School of Education Alumni Association and the Graduate School Alumni Association to form the Federation of Alumni Associations of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUFAA).

中大有間吧

酒吧群組是最近熱門新聞之一。周五下課後去蒲吧是英美大學生活的一部分。中大同學想蒲吧是否要到中環蘇豪或尖沙咀呢？校園内有很多餐廳，有沒有一家酒吧在附近呢？

答案是有的，就在思源館，它是大學內唯一提供酒精飲料的餐廳。位於聯合書院鄭楝材樓地庫的「思源館」，又名「思源文娛中心」，2001年由思源基金會捐助建立，面積約三百六十平方米，場地可容納一百人，除了設有酒吧，更有表演台、卡拉OK及美式桌球等娛樂設施。大學有不少工作坊和周年活動都在這裏舉辦，有些校友更在此舉行婚禮。

思源館年資雖短，卻經歷了幾回的易手，由外判至校友經營再到學生營辦，又輾轉交到大學賓館手上，最後由聯合書院的「思源文娛中心會所管理委員會」營運¹，由接待到煮食一手包辦。除酒精類飲品以外，還提供甜品及期間限定食品，曾多次獲舌尖上的中大推介。

待疫情減退後，不妨到這裏歡聚暢飲。不過，現在就哪裏都不要去，嘗試跟同學在虛擬空間把酒言歡吧！

疫症來襲—停課不停學

2003年，非典型肺炎襲港，中文大學首次因疫症停課兩周（2003年3月29日至4月13日）。在停課前夕，2003年3月21日大學成立了「香港中文大學校園（嚴重急性呼吸道症候群）專責小組^１」，以統籌大學校園及各員生有關預防、敎育及應變事宜。

疫症期間，最為大眾印象深刻的，大概是中大醫學院成員和威爾斯親王醫院內專責照顧非典型肺炎病人的前線醫護人員（Dirty Team），獲選亞洲《時代》週刊的年度亞洲英雄之首；還有聯合校友謝婉雯醫生為搶救非典型肺炎病人而受感染，不幸離世的惡耗。

抗疫期間，除了醫學院擔起前線的治療及研究工作外，大學的各部門也分別運用各自的專業向中小學提供支援，共渡時艱。中小學停課期間(2003年3月27至4月21日)，訊息工程學系黃寶財教授帶領中大學術發展項目「香港學校網絡」，推出第一代網上教學平台，開發「停課不停學」功課收發系統，在停課期間免費提供給全港中小學及幼稚園使用，在電腦系統尚未盛行的年代，成功推進網上教學的雛型。教育學院及香港教育研究所也免費開放由何萬貫教授策劃的「每日一篇」計劃，提供網上閱讀學習服務予全港中小學生，讓同學在停課期間不會荒廢學習，並養成閱讀習慣。為協助中小學和幼稚園復課做好準備，中大公共衛生學院聯同中大那打素護理學院及前線醫護工作人員，推出一系「健康校園齊抗炎」健康教育活動，透過「抗炎小子」擔任「健康校園齊抗炎」的代言人，製作數輯錄像介紹預防非典型肺炎的方法，發放予全港中小學及幼稚園。

今年（2020年1月25日），大學再因疫症來襲宣告停課，2月17日開始在線教學。現今資訊科技和教學軟件發達，昔日在線教學所面對的網絡及資源問題已不再是難題，但迎來的又會是什麼挑戰呢？

方樹泉樓四十年

獻給父親的禮物—方樹泉樓

一九八零年一月中文大學方樹泉樓正式開幕，大樓座落大學火車站對面，樓高三層，建築費一百五十萬由方樹福堂暨屬下機構捐贈。自大樓落成至今，雅禮中國語文研習所（昔日之新雅中國語文研習所）一直札根於此。

方樹泉樓於一九七八年九月廿八日舉行奠基典禮，當日由方樹泉先生之長子方潤華先生致辭，以下為講辭節錄：「在幾個月前，當馬臨教授談及中大增建語言中心大樓一事，本人心裏認為相當有價值，也引起很大的興趣。及後與家父磋商，今年剛好是他八十歲大壽，最有意義的禮物是甚麼，他很高興表示，由於他和我都沒有機會進入大學，認為最好是捐款來作育英才，以促進各國民族的交誼為目標。」大樓是方潤華及家人獻給父親方樹泉的生日禮物，也是他們贈予中大各人研習中國語文的厚意。

大樓落成後，方樹福堂基金於一九九零年再度捐資興建方潤華堂，以擴展中國語文研習所的教學設施及活動場地。

今年迎來方樹泉樓落成四十周年，研習所仍然不懈地為國際學生提供中國語文訓練，秉承方潤華先生在開幕禮之寄語：以語言中心為橋樑，改善語言隔膜，達到文化交流，促進各民族與國家間的情誼。

A Gift for Dad – 40^th Anniversary of Fong Shu Chuen Building

The Opening Ceremony of Fong Shu Chuen Building was held on 24th January, 1980. This three-storey Building, located opposite to the University MTR Station, was donated by the Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation and Group of Companies. Since its opening, the building has been the home of The Yale-China Chinese Language Centre (former New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre) till now.

Mr. Fong Yun Wah, son of Mr. Fong Shu Chuen delivered a speech at the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony in 1978. Here was an excerpt:

“A few months ago, I was very interested to learn from Professor Ma Lin that The Chinese University of Hong Kong would like to have a building for its Language Centre, whose activities would expand. To me, this is a very worthwhile endeavor. When I discussed this with my father, he too shared my enthusiasm for such a project. In another two days, my family will be celebrating my father’s 80th birthday. We have been looking around for a suitable gift for him to mark this happy occasion. And my father indicated that a contribution towards the construction of the Language Centre Building would be most appropriate. Since neither he nor I had had the chance to study in a university, he thought that a donation to help the University to educate our young people would be very meaningful.”

After the opening of the Building, the Fong Shu Fook Tong Foundation made another donation in 1990 to build the Fong Yun Wah Hall,an extension to the Fong Shu Chuen Building, in order to enhance the teaching facilities and capacity for the Language Centre.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Fong Shu Chuen Building. The Chinese Language Centre continues to provide language training for international students as before and aims to reduce communication barriers and promote cultural exchanges to response to the aspiration of Mr. Fong.
