Football Fever

The World Cup 2018 has come to an end. We still remembered eight years ago, a crowd of about a thousand people had assembled at the CUHK’s University Mall watching live broadcast of the World Cup final on a huge projector screen. Let’s look back and recall some football activities at CUHK.

The two major football fields Chung Chi College’s Lingnan Soccer Pitch and The Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field were built in 1966 and 1978 respectively. In the same year of the opening of the Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field, students could take football as elective course of physical education. Beyond the classes, CU students as well as staff also like to form football teams to join inter-departmental / faculty / collegiate / university competitions. For instance the University organized the first “Vice-Chancellor’s Cup” (1981) which was a competition between the administrative staff and faculty members. The University staff formed the “CUHK Staff Football Team” (1992) to organize regular practice and play matches. The Student Union organized the “CUHK Super League” (1998) for the undergraduates. The League has been suspended for several years and resumed in 2017.  Another football event is “The Vice-Chancellor’s Cup” Soccer Match which was first played in 2004 to commemorate the collaboration of the two universities CUHK and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) during the SARS ordeal. In the past 14 years CUHK has won nine games, HKU has won once, and the teams have tied four times.

It is worth mentioning that in the final game of the “Men's Soccer Competition 2016-2017”, which was held by the University Sport Federation of Hong Kong (USFHK), CUHK competed with the Education University of Hong Kong (EDUHK) for the championship. The two teams tied 1:1 in the play time, and then CUHK defeated the opponent in penalty shootout by 5:4, bringing back the championship trophy after 23 years!

The University Sports Field was built in 1978 and renamed The Sir Philip Haddon-Cave Sports Field in January 1987 as a tribute to Hong Kong’s former Chief Secretary Sir Philip Haddon-Cave for his distinguished public service.

The University’s Physical Education Programme was fully implemented in 1978/79. Under this programme, physical education was required of all first-year students. There was also an elective programme open to students of all years. In CUHK Calendar 1979-80 we can see that Football courses were open for men only. Today there are football courses for both men and women.
