大學檔案的研究支援服務 University Archives’ Research Support Service

大學檔案除了致力蒐集、整理、維護具永久保留價值的中大檔案，更有一重要任務——推廣中大檔案的使用，支援校内外單位與個人的教學、研究、出版、甚至影視製作等工作。  

例如最近由中大新亞書院、藝術系、藝術系系友會出版的《趙鶴琴》一書，介紹這位在中大任教多年的著名篆刻書畫家生平，並選刊其印章作品、文章及講義等，為研究趙氏藝術成就的重要參考著作。《趙》書編輯小組得知中大校長鈐章為趙先生所刻（連結），於是聯絡大學檔案搜集相關資料，而大學檔案亦積極協助，終尋得藏於中大傳訊及公共關係處的「香港中文大學校長之章篆刻設計書」(1964)，另有趙鶴琴書中大校訓「博文約禮」式樣 (1964) 及趙鶴琴潤例 (1959, 1963, 1968) 等，收錄《趙》書中。

In addition to collect, organize and preserve CUHK records that have enduring value, the University Archives also strives to promote the use of the historical records by supporting teaching, research, publishing, and audio-visual production activities of the University community and external users.  

For instance, Chao Ho-chin, a book recently published by CUHK’s New Asia College, Department of Fine Arts, and the Alumni Association of Fine Arts Department, which introduces the life of the famous seal carving artist and painter who had taught in CUHK for years. The book collects Mr. Chao’s seal carving works and reprints his articles and lecture notes, etc. The editorial team of the book had contacted the University Archives for collecting relevant information of one of the Mr. Chao’s work – the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Seal (link). With help of the University Archives, the preliminary proposal of the seal (1964), the calligraphy of CUHK motto – “Bo Wen Yue Li” written by Mr. Chao (1964), as well as the price list (1959, 1963, 1968) were found in the Communications and Public Relations Office of the University. The images of the above-mentioned items were presented in the book.

Chao Ho-chin – the preliminary proposal of the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Seal (1964). The holder of the seal in the early proposal was lion, and later it was changed to phoenix.

高錕校長的珍貴展品 Professor Sir Charles Kao's Precious Relics on Display

大學展覽廳現設展櫃介紹前校長高錕教授 (1933-2018) 的生平及其對中大的貢獻，並展出高教授的中學會考證書、手稿、傳記、大英帝國司令勳章、香港特別行政區政府大紫荊勳章等珍貴展品，以表懷念。

In memory of our former Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Charles Kao (1933-2018), the University Gallery now has showcases to introduce Prof. Kao’s life as well as his contributions to the University, and display precious relics such as his Hong Kong School Certificate, manuscripts, biography, Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE), and Grand Bauhinia Medal, HKSAR Government, etc.

與中學生分享中大故事 University Archives Shares CUHK Stories with Secondary School Students

四年一度的沙田節現正舉行，其委員會歷史文化小組邀請區內團體及學校參加「尋找沙田記憶街頭劇」，以展現沙田新市鎮的發展，而「香港中文大學的變遷及趣聞」便是其中一大創作主題。

9月4日，大學檔案主管曾柳歡女士獲邀到訪參加街頭劇的沙田台山商會中學，向近200位同學分享中大的歷史和趣聞，例如：中文大學成立過程、校園從荒山到大學城的演變、中大收藏的寶物、中大生的校園生活和學習苦樂，又介紹大家耳熟能詳的中大人等。與會同學踴躍回答提問，既加深了對中大的認識，亦爲其街頭劇創作帶來靈感。

The quadrennial “Shatin Festival” is being held now, and the Festival committee's History and Culture Group has invited organizations and schools to participate in the "Searching for Sha Tin Memory” street theatre to reveal the development of the new town. One of the major themes is “The Growth and Development of the Chinese University of Hong Kong”.

On 4^th September, the University Archivist Ms. Sintra Tsang was invited to deliver a talk to about 200 students of Toi Shan Association College. Ms. Tsang’s presentation covered the establishment of the University, campus development, CUHK treasures, student life, and well-known CUHK people, etc. The students actively participated in the Q&A section, which had deepened their understanding of CUHK and provided inspiration for their street theatre scriptwriting.

圖書館迎新 Library Orientation

新學年即將開始，新生們除了正忙著選課和搬進宿舍外，亦要花時間熟悉中大的各項設施，圖書館便是其中之一。

過去在電腦還未普及使用的時候，茫茫書海中找一本書並非易事，所以早於1970年代，中大圖書館便舉辦新生輔導，介紹圖書館服務及藏書。當時還有演講介紹「卡片目錄使用法」˴「國會圖書館分類法」˴各科參考書目等；另印有《圖書館手冊》，詳列圖書館開放時間˴借書規則˴圖書館平面圖等資料，供師生查閲。

隨著互聯網發展，上述資訊不少都可以在圖書館網頁裡找到。中大圖書館在每年學期伊始仍然舉辦多場迎新講座，内容包括介紹圖書館內電子及印刷本的學術資源˴圖書館服務及設施˴大學圖書館導賞等。當然，同學如對圖書館服務有任何疑問，可隨時聯絡圖書館職員。

The new academic year of CUHK is about to begin. The new students are busy selecting courses and moving into hostels. They also need to spend time familiarizing themselves with the facilities of the University, and indeed the CUHK Library is one of them.

In the old days, when computers were not widely used, locating a book in library was a challenging task. Therefore since 1970s the CUHK Library has started to provide students the orientation to library’s services and collections. Instructions on the uses of the card catalogue, the Library of Congress Classification scheme, and basic information on subject bibliographies, etc., were given. The Library had also printed the University Library Handbook which introducing the Library services such as the library opening hours, borrowing rules, and floor plans, etc.

With the development of the Internet, many of the above information can be found on the Library webpage. CUHK Library still held a number of orientations at the beginning of the academic year. Topics include finding online and print academic resources, services and facilities, and guided tour of the University Library. Of course, students who have any questions about library services can contact the library staff at any time.

《香港中文大學圖書館手冊》(1976)——1976年本科生只能借書十本，兩星期内歸還，最多續借兩次；現在的中大本科生可借書一百本，三十天歸還，最多可續借至一百八十天！
The Chinese University of Hong Kong University Library System Handbook (1976)——In 1976, CUHK undergraduate students could only borrow 10 books, return them within two weeks, and renew them at most twice. Now the students can borrow 100 books, return them in 30 days, and renew up to 180 days!

如何使用圖書館卡片目錄 (1970年代)——先走進卡片目錄櫃的方陣中，按作者或書名的字母或筆劃順序，鎖定有關櫃子，再逐頁翻查，查到後按卡上所列位置往書架找書。要是書本已借出或是被錯置，之前的一番工夫便白費了。
How to use the Library Card Catalogue (1970s)——First, you selected the right card catalogue cabinet and drawer by author or title, or number of strokes of the title for Chinese books. Second, you went through the cards for the book you wanted. Lastly, you proceeded to the relevant book shelf. If the book had been borrowed or misplaced, your previous effort would go to waste.
