“If everything is money-oriented, I will tell you that there will be no fibre optic technology achievements today.” --Professor Charles Kao
Professor Charles Kao, the third Vice-Chancellor of CUHK and Nobel Prize Laureate passed away on 23rd September 2018. On the anniversary this year, the Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease has organized a roving exhibition “Remembering Charles” to highlight the contributions which “Father of Fiber Optics” had made to science, education and the society.
The display panels showcase momentous life events of Professor Charles Kao, his achievements on science, philosophy of life and memories of his family. Exhibits include a replica of Nobel Prize medal, sample of glass fiber optic bundles, Professor Kao’s Hong Kong School Certificate, and artwork produced by Professor Kao during his art therapy treatments, etc. Some digitized images of slides are on display as well. These slides, donated by Mrs. Gwen Kao to the University Archives, were taken by Professor Kao in the 1960s-70s recording his family life and pleasure trips.
The exhibition commenced on 16th September at Exchange Square and then moved to Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre. CUHK University Library is the last stop of the exhibition, we hope the exhibition can bring back fond memories of Prof. Kao, and raise the awareness of dementia to the community.
