香港中文大學校長鈐章 Seal of the Vice-Chancellor

2018年1月1日，段崇智教授將接任中大第八任校長，而校長就職典禮日期則尚待公佈。按照慣例，典禮其中一個儀式為校董會主席向新任校長頒授校長鈐章。

鈐章由已故新亞書院趙鶴琴先生所刻，文曰「香港中文大學校長之印」，印文為秦篆陽文，銅製，重約一點六公斤，寬長各五點二厘米，高度連鈕共十點五厘米，鈕作鳳鳥形。於1964年校長就職典禮時授與首任校長李卓敏博士，自此成爲傳統。事實上，鈐章自製成以來，從未蓋於任何公函或文件上，只作為校長的象徵信物。

有興趣人士可到大學展覽廳觀賞其複製品。

From 1 January 2018, Professor Rocky S. Tuan would become the eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and the date of the Congregation for the Installation of New Vice-Chancellor is yet to be announced. By convention, the Chairman of the Council would present the official seal to the new Vice-Chancellor at the Installation Ceremony.

The seal was designed and engraved by the late Mr. Chao Ho-chin of New Asia College. The artifact bears the Chinese inscription “seal of the Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong”, written in the clerical style of the Qin Dynasty. This cast bronze seal weighs 1.6 kg and measures 5.2 x 5.2 x 10.5 cm. There is a knob carved in the shape of a “Feng”, the mythical phoenix, on top. It was firstly presented to our founding Vice-Chancellor Dr. Choh-ming Li in 1964. In fact, the seal’s imprint has never graced any official document of the University but an emblem of the Vice-Chancellor's authority.

榮譽博士 Honoris Causa

中大於11月30日（星期四）舉行的第八十四屆大會，向五位傑出人士——陳淑良博士（白雪仙）、Arieh WARSHEL教授、周建平博士、利乾先生、利易海倫女士，頒授榮譽博士學位，以表揚他們對促進文化藝術、科研發展、教育及增進人民福祉的傑出貢獻。

榮譽學位頒授已有逾六百年的歷史，最早的記錄可以追溯到1470年代的牛津大學。榮譽學位一般為博士，有時為碩士。根據《香港中文大學條例》規程26〈學位及其他資格頒授〉，大學校董會可建議頒授榮譽碩士學位或榮譽博士學位。不過，中大從未頒授過榮譽碩士學位。

中大的榮譽學位共四類：榮譽法學博士、榮譽文學博士、榮譽理學博士、榮譽社會科學博士。1964年中大首次頒授榮譽學位，之後除了1965、1966、1967年外，每年均會頒授。2013年中大金禧校慶，該年共有九位人士獲頒榮譽博士，為歷届最多。

The Chinese University will confer honorary doctorates (honoris causa) on the five distinguished persons - Dr. CHAN Shuk-leung (alias PAK Suet-sin), Professor Arieh WARSHEL, Dr. ZHOU Jianping, Mr. Chien LEE, and Lady LEE YICK Hoi-lun Helen, at its 84th Congregation to be held on 30 November (Thursday) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective areas of achievement in cultural and educational progress, scientific research and the promotion of community welfare.

The practice of honorary degree conferment dates back to the Middle Ages, and the earliest record was in the late 1470s conferred by the University of Oxford. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree. In accordance of “Statute 26 Degree and Other Awards”, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance, the Council may recommended the award of a degree of Master or Doctor honoris causa, but in fact the University has never conferred a Master honoris causa.

Distinguished persons may be awarded one of four types of honorary doctorates: Doctor of Laws (LLD) honoris causa, Doctor of Literature (DLit) honoris causa, Doctor of Science (DSc) honoris causa, and Doctor of Social Science (DSSc) honoris causa. The University held its first honorary degrees congregation in 1964. After a short suspension from 1965 to 1967, since 1968 the University confers honorary doctorates every year. In 2013 CUHK Golden Jubilee, nine persons were awarded honorary doctorates which is a record of the University history.

60th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees (4/12/2003)——Prof. Jao Tsung I, world-renowned scholar in Chinese and Oriental Studies, was conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa.

兆龍樓的昔與今 Sui Loong Pao Building – Then and Now

過去一個月，原分佈於大學本部不同建築物的財務處各單位陸續遷入兆龍樓。最後搬遷的會計組，亦剛於10月24日遷入新址。這棟落成四十年的建築物又有新住戶。

兆龍樓高四層，於1977年底落成，得到著名商人包玉剛爵士捐贈全額建築費共港幣三百餘萬元。中大為感謝包爵士，特以其父包兆龍先生命名此樓。兆龍樓啓用典禮於1978年1月12日舉行，當日林蔭大道上冠蓋雲集，更邀請到時任港督的麥理浩爵士擔任剪綵嘉賓。

兆龍樓早期供工商管理學院和公共事務研究中心等教研單位之用，亦曾是醫學院臨時辦事處所在；1992年成爲教務處及其屬下單位的辦公樓；2014年教務處遷出，2017年成爲財務處的辦公樓。

In the past month, units of the Bursary were busy moving into Sui Loong Pao Building from different places of the Central Campus. The whole removal process was completed on 24 October, when the last unit, Accounting Operations and Systems Unit, moved to this 40-year-old building.

The construction of the four-storey Sui Loong Pao Building was completed in late 1977 with a donation of over HK $3 million from Sir Yue-kong Pao, a renowned businessman. In appreciation of Sir Pao’s generosity, the building was named after his father Mr. Sui Loong Pao. Witnessed by over a hundred honoured guests, Sui Loong Pao Building was officially opened on 12 January 1978 by Lord Murray MacLehose, then Hong Kong Governor.

In the early days Sui Loong Pao Building housed the Faculty of Business Administration and the Public Affairs Research Centre, and used to be the temporary office of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1992 the Building became the Registry office. In 2014 the Registry moved out and in 2017 Sui Loong Pao Building was converted to the Bursary office.

中大早期課程資訊 CUHK Programme Guide in the Early Days

選擇入讀什麽學系是一件大事：除了影響數年的大學生活，更關乎以後的職業路向，所以學生報讀前需要深入瞭解心儀學科，然後作決定。中大每年都會舉辦本科入學資訊日，設有入學講座及入學資料答問環節等，提供入學及各項課程的最新資訊；又開放大學設施，讓學生親身感受中大的學習氣氛。未能參加資訊日的學生，亦可查閲中大網頁或向相關學系查詢，非常方便。

試想想數十年前，資訊沒有這般發達——沒有資訊日，沒有互聯網，甚至電話仍未流行的時候，想報讀中大的學生透過什麽渠道認識中大？電台廣播便是其中之一。1966年5月，中大和香港廣播電台（現在的香港電台）擧辦「中文大學科系選習指導」電台節目，由每個科系的專家代表向社會大衆介紹中文大學的科系，例如學系所設的課程˴研究趨勢˴修讀條件˴和學生出路等，與今日所提供的入學資訊大同小異。整個節目共介紹了19個科系，還有當時剛成立的研究院，為學生提供相當重要的課程資料；而訪問内容後來整理成書，由香港廣播電台編輯，香港政府印務局印行，供社會人士參考。

Choosing major is a crucial decision: it affects students’ university life and will probably have significant impact on students' career in the future, thus students should have in-depth understanding of their favourite subjects before admission. Each year CUHK organizes orientation day for undergraduate admissions by giving lectures and Q&A sessions, as well as opening the university facilities in order to provide up-to-date programme information to secondary school students and the public. Students who are not able to participate in the event can browse the University website or inquire the departments to access the information.

Just imagine few decades ago, when there was no orientation day, nor internet (and even telephone was not popular), how secondary school students obtained information about CUHK? Radio broadcasting was one of the major sources. In May 1966, CUHK and Radio Hong Kong (today RTHK) presented a series of talks by CUHK faculty members and administrators to introduce programmes offered, such as course modules, research trend, admission requirements, and student career path, etc. The series, covering 19 programmes and the newly established Graduate School, provided essential information which helped potential students to choose their future fields of study. The contents were later compiled by the Radio Hong Kong and printed by the Hong Kong Government Printer.

中國林業科學先驅——凌道揚 A Pioneer of Forestry Science in China – Lin Daoyang

今年八月，中大創辦人之一——凌道揚博士在深圳市龍崗區的故居經修葺後開放予市民參觀，内設圖片展覽，介紹凌博士的生平和貢獻。凌博士與中大的關係，未必爲人所熟知，但他所題的一副對聯，大家都會見過——
「崇高惟博愛　本天地立心　無間東西　溝通學術
  基礎在育才　當海山勝境　有懷胞與　陶鑄人羣」
這副聳立在崇基學院大埔道校門和大學鐵路站旁的崇基校聯，每日見證著絡繹不絕的車輛和行人。

今天的中大校園，追溯淵源，始於五十年代，時爲崇基學院院長的凌博士，向政府申請崇基校園旁的山地植樹造林，無意中奠定了後來成立的中文大學的校園地基。

凌道揚博士1888年生於廣東新安縣布吉村（今深圳市龍崗區）一基督教家庭，祖父和父親均爲牧師。1909年，凌博士畢業於上海聖約翰大學，獲文學士學位後被清政府聘爲八旗學校英語教師，翌年陪同兩位清室貴胄赴美國麻省農學院學習農科，後考入耶魯大學研究生院，1914年獲林學碩士學位，成爲第一位取得林業科學專業的中國人。

有感當時中國積弱與林業資源不發達有關，凌博士主張「森林救國」，回國後致力於林業科學的研究和普及工作，並於1915年發起「中國植樹節」和1917年創辦「中華森林會」，宣傳保護林木的重要性。凌博士更曾參與孫中山《建國方略》和《三民主義》農林部分章節的寫作，和黎元洪大總統時期《森林法》之起草，並從事黃河上游水土保持暨西北建設規劃等。

1940年代，凌博士來港定居，參與創建崇基學院，並於1955年至1960年出任學院院長，期間與新亞書院和聯合書院成立香港中文專上學校協會（1957），爭取在香港成立以中文為教學媒介的大學；又以其專業知識擎劃崇基校園；1960年至1963年出任聯合書院院長，於中文大學成立後退休。1993年8月20日，凌博士於美國病逝，享年104歲。

In August, the former residence of Dr. Lin Daoyang, one of the founding fathers of CUHK, has been repaired and opened by the local government of Longgang District of Shenzhen. A photo exhibition of "A Pioneer of Forestry Science in China – Lin Daoyang" was also set up to introduce Dr. Lin and his notable contributions to China. Nowadays CUHK people may have little or no idea about Dr. Lin, but they are probably familiar with his calligraphy – the famous Chung Chi College couplet, which erected at the College entrance on Tai Po Road as well as the University Station.

In 1950s Dr. Lin (then the President of Chung Chi College) applied to the Government for the land adjoining Chung Chi campus for afforestation, and the granted land later became the foundation of CUHK campus.

Dr. Lin Daoyang was born in Buji Village, Xin’an County (now Longgang District, Shenzhen), Guangdong Province in 1888. He grew up in a Christian family that both his grandfather and father were priests. In 1909, Dr. Lin graduated with a BA degree from Saint John's University, Shanghai and was employed by the Qing Government as English teacher of Baqi School. In the following year, Dr. Lin accompanied with two Manchurian nobles to study at the University of Massachusetts, U.S., and later he entered Yale University and earned a master’s degree of Forestry in 1914. He was the first Chinese obtaining such a professional degree.

Dr. Lin felt that the weakness of China was a result of its poor condition of forestry resource, so when he came back to China he dedicated to research and promotion of Forestry Science. He found "China Arbor Day" in 1915 and "China Forestry Society" in 1917. Dr. Ling has participated in writing agriculture and forestry part of Sun Yat-sen's Plan for National Reconstruction and the Three Principles of the People, drafting of forest law for Li Yuanhong, the president of the Republic of China, as well as the conservation of the upper course of the Yellow River and the construction planning of Northwest China.

In 1940s, Dr. Ling came to Hong Kong and become one of the founding fathers of Chung Chi College. He was the President of Chung Chi from 1955 and 1960. During this period, Chung Chi, New Asia and United College formed “the Chinese Colleges Joint Council” (1957) to strive for degree-awarding status for the three colleges and establishment of a new university using Chinese as the medium of instruction. As a forestry expert Dr. Lin had also put a lot of effort into Chung Chi’s campus planning. From 1960 to 1963 Dr. Lin became the President of United College and retired after the establishment of CUHK. Dr. Lin passed away in U.S. on 20 August 1993 at the age of 104.

電影中的中大——《年輕人》 CUHK in Movie – Young People (1972)

中大坐享偌大校園，兼擁海山勝景，除了吸引遊人如鯽，也有不少影視作品到來取景。1972年，著名導演張徹開拍電影《年輕人》，講述大學生在友情和愛情上的抉擇，由姜大衛˴狄龍˴陳觀泰˴陳依齡˴陳美齡主演。爲求逼真，電影得到中大崇基學院同意，在校園内實景拍攝。

電影中，牟路思怡圖書館和眾志堂剛剛落成；背後的山頭已被夷平，新亞書院和聯合書院正準備從市區遷入沙田校園；遠方的馬鞍山尚未開發，一片翠綠……。影片記錄了1970年代的校園景色，是相當珍貴的中大史料。

The expansive and stunning campus makes CUHK a perfect place for leisure, and sometimes film shooting. In 1972, directed by Chang Cheh and starring David Chiang, Ti Lung, Chen Kuan-tai, Irene Chan and Agnes Chan, Young People, a movie about college students’ friendship and love, was shot in Chung Chi College campus with the College’s permission.

In the movie we can see the then newly opened Elisabath Luce Moore Library and Chung Chi Tang; the hill of the campus was excavated and graded, ready for New Asia College and United College to move from midtown to Shatin campus; Ma On Shan then was a remote and isolated place… More than a movie, Young People is a precious historical record which has captured the scene of the campus in 1970s.

創校留影--來自耶魯的禮物 A Gift from Yale

當你參觀大學展覽廳時，除了看到很多跟中大成立和發展有關的文獻和文物之外，你可有留意廳内的多媒體展示？當中有一段1963年10月17日中文大學成立典禮的錄像，和三所創校書院——崇基學院、新亞書院、聯合書院——當年的校園片段和院長訪問。

這些錄像很難得，影片原為耶魯大學雅禮協會拍攝。雅禮協會與中大的淵源始於上世紀。新亞書院成立不久，協會每年安排耶魯畢業生來書院教授英語，並於六十年代資助書院興建校舍；中大成立後，於七十年代與中大聯合開辦專爲外籍學生而設的亞洲課程。六十多年來學術、文化、研究各方面的合作交流從未間斷。2013年1月，校長沈祖堯教授率代表團前往美國紐黑文，頒授榮譽法學博士證書予耶魯大學校長Richard Charles Levin教授，耶魯大學就將這些剛修復好的影片送予中大。

影片原本沒有聲音，幸好中大傳訊及公共關係處保存了成立典禮和院長訪問的錄音。這兩批有畫無聲和有聲無畫的紀錄，經大學視聽製作部剪輯合倂後，一段聲影並茂的當年錄像就展現在訪客眼前。

In addition to the precious artifacts, the multimedia resources in the University Gallery are also worthy of attention. One of the display panels is playing videos of CUHK Inauguration Ceremony held on 17 October 1963, early campuses of three founding Colleges i.e. Chung Chi College, New Asia College, and United College, and interviews of the College Heads.

These videos were filmed by Yale-China Association. The ties between the Association and CUHK have been established for decades. Yale-China sent Yale graduates to New Asia College to teach English in the 1950s, sponsored the College campus construction in the 1960s, and jointly launched the International Asian Studies Programme with CUHK in the 1970s. More academic and cultural exchange programmes between the two institutions have been fostered. In January 2013, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Sung led a delegation to New Haven to confer the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws to Professor Richard Charles Levin, the President of Yale University. Yale University presented to Professor Sung a remastered copy of these early video recordings.

The original video clips were all silent. Fortunately, voice recordings of the Ceremony and interviews of the College heads are kept by CUHK Communications and Public Relations Office. With the expertise of the Audio-Visual Division (CUAV) colleagues, the audio and video clips are merged seamlessly to show visitors the scene of 1963.

國際檔案日 2017 International Archives Day 2017

國際檔案理事會於1948年在聯合國教育、科學及文化組織支持下成立，致力於檔案的有效管理和世界檔案遺產的保護和利用。理事會現擁有來自199個國家和地區的約1800名會員，是全球檔案專業人員的代表。

2007年，理事會通過於每年6月9日（理事會成立日）舉辦國際檔案日，向大衆介紹檔案的保存和使用，提高大衆對檔案在社會記憶和良好管治的重要性的認識。

今年國際檔案日的主題是「檔案、公民權利及跨文化」。香港國際檔案日慶祝活動於2017年6月10日(星期六) 舉行。參展機構將介紹各自的獨特收藏；而當天講座主題將圍繞從事檔案工作的經驗及挑戰。歡迎有興趣人士出席。

Found in 1948 under the auspices of UNESCO, the International Council on Archives (ICA) is dedicated to the effective management of records and the preservation, care and use of the world's archival heritage through its representation of records and archive professionals across the globe. Today the ICA has approximately 1800 members in 199 countries and territories.

In 2007, the ICA decided to launch the International Archives Day on 9 June (the date ICA was created) every year. On that day the participated archives will introduce preservation and use of archives to the public, and raise awareness among the public of the importance of records and archives on social memory and good governance.

This year the global theme of the day is ‘Archives, Citizenship and Interculturalism’. Archives in Hong Kong will celebrate the day on 10 June 2017. Exhibitors from a range of institutions will be participating, and a series of talks exploring topics from across this field will also be held.

中大藝術一甲子 60th Anniversary of the Department of Fine Arts

中大藝術系源於新亞書院1957年開辦的二年制藝術專修科，初設國畫、西畫兩組。注重藝術教育的錢穆院長特意邀請留學法國的著名油畫家陳士文先生任首位科主任。當時的老師有留學日本、繪畫、書法、篆刻皆精的丁衍庸先生、文物收藏及鑒賞家王季遷先生、書法家曾克耑先生等；亦不時邀請藝術名家來校講學，如抽象派大師趙無極先生、和國畫大師溥儒(心畬)先生。

1959年專修科改為四年制本科課程。1963年新亞書院加入中大，正式成立中大藝術系，為香港首個提供視覺藝術教育的大專學系。

除了本科課程，藝術系亦開辦哲學碩士(1981) 、哲學博士(1992)、藝術碩士(藝術創作)(1993)、藝術文學碩士(2009)等課程，使藝術系成為香港培育藝術人才的重鎮。

The Department of Fine Arts was founded in 1957. At the beginning it was a two-year fine arts specialized training programme launched at New Asia College, which consisted of two divisions, namely Chinese Painting and Western Painting. Invited by Dr. Ch’ien Mu, Mr. Chen Shih-wen, the oil painting master who had studied Western art in France, became the first director of the programme. Teachers in the early days included Mr. Ding Yanyong, master of painting, Chinese Calligraphy, and seal carving and had studied Western art in Japan; Mr. Wang Chi-Ch’ien, art collector and connoisseur; and Mr. Zeng Keduan, Chinese calligrapher, etc.; renowned artists like Mr. Zao Wou-Ki, master of postwar abstraction, and Mr. Pu Ru (Xinyu), eminent Chinese painter, were invited to give lectures.

In 1959 it was developed into a four-year undergraduate programme. When The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 1963, New Asia College was one of the University’s constituent colleges. The Department of Fine Arts became the first tertiary institute to offer courses of visual arts in Hong Kong.

Since then, the Department has developed a balanced and comprehensive undergraduate, and established postgraduate programmes including MPhil (1981), PhD (1992), MFA (1993) and MA (2009) programmes. All these have made the Department a strategic base for training art professionals in Hong Kong.

中國文化研究所 Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS)

中國文化研究所成立於1967年11月1日，以「結合傳統與現代，融會中國與西方」為使命，促進中國文化及相關領域的研究。研究所首任所長由李卓敏校長兼任，臨時所址設於九龍彌敦道545號安利大廈，而首項重點工作為創辦《中國文化研究所學報》。1971年，沙田校園中的中國文化研究所落成啓用。研究所四合院式設計出自大學建築師司徒惠手筆，並得著名建築師貝聿銘提供意見。

現時研究所下設文物館 (1971)、翻譯研究中心 (1971)、中國考古藝術研究中心 (1978)、吳多泰中國語文研究中心 (1979)、當代中國文化研究中心 (1993)、劉殿爵中國古籍研究中心 (2005)，及中國研究服務中心 (1963；2013年加入研究所)，同時積極與校內多個與中國研究有關的單位建立合作關係，推動中國研究。研究所主要出版物包括：《中國文化研究所學報》、《二十一世紀》、《中國語文研究》、《譯叢》、及《漢達古籍研究叢書》等。各單位亦常出版專刊、叢書及其他學術專書。

The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) was established on 1 November 1967. It aims to “combine tradition with modernity, bring together China and the West” by promoting the research and study of wide-ranging fields in Chinese studies. Dr. Choh-ming Li, the Vice-Chancellor, was also the first Director of ICS. ICS was originally located in the On Lee Building, 545 Nathan Road, Kowloon, and the first task of ICS was to publish the Journal of Chinese Studies. The building of ICS on the Shatin campus was completed in 1971 which was designed by the University Architect, Szeto Wai, in consultation with I.M. Pei.

Under the Institute of Chinese Studies are the Art Museum (1971), Research Centre for Translation (1971), Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art (1978), T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre (1979), Research Centre for Contemporary Chinese Culture (1993), D.C. Lau Research Centre for Chinese Ancient Texts (2005), and the Universities Service Centre for China Studies (1963; joined ICS in 2013), Besides, units from different departments and disciplines have been affiliated with ICS in order to strengthen inter-disciplinary cooperation in Chinese studies, facilitating the efforts to make CUHK a premier international hub of Chinese studies. The following periodicals are published by the Institute and its various units: Journal of Chinese Studies, Twenty-First Century Bimonthly, Studies in Chinese Linguistics, Renditions, and The CHANT (CHinese ANcient Texts) Series, etc.
