大學檔案庫 University Archives Repository

為妥善保存香港中文大學之歷史文獻，大學檔案於2015年12月成立，它的使命是有系統地蒐集、整理、維護具永久保留價值的中大檔案。歷史檔案的整理是一項繁複的工作——從鑒定˴入藏˴分類˴編目˴描述˴修復˴儲存到使用，除了檔案人員的專業知識外，一個設備完善的檔案庫房是不可或缺的。檔案庫不同於一般的儲物倉庫，由於歷史檔案須永久保存，必須為之提供理想的環境，因此在選址˴設施規劃˴物料使用等都需要周詳的考慮。

大學檔案職員於走訪多個校内單位，知悉各中央部門的檔案儲存情況後，隨即向大學爭取一個足以應付大學檔案初創階段的檔案儲存空間需要。中大雖然擁有全港面積最大的大學校園，然而校務與日俱增，空間需求殷切，要為檔案覓得安身之所實在不易。經過數個月的考察及商議，大學領導層於2017年中批出一個約八十二平方米的房間，供檔案整理及儲存之用。檔案庫選址甚佳：位處大學本部的田家炳樓，既爲大學圖書館所在，亦毗鄰各重要的行政單位，有助緊密交流，為檔案工作帶來便利。

儘管如此，由於檔案庫所在地前身為辦公室，原間隔及許多設施並不符合檔案庫的要求，因此需要大幅改動。中大的校園發展處在此事上提供了極大的支援，例如與大學檔案商討規劃及物料，以充分利用空間；物色及督導裝修承辦商，以符合檔案庫的要求等。2017年12月檔案庫的裝修工程開始，歷時四個多月至2018年4月完工。工程耗資逾百萬港元，設施均達到專業標準：檔案庫設有嚴格溫度及濕度的控制，維持穩定的儲存環境；使用非灑水式的FM200氣體滅火系統；窗戶貼有防曬隔熱膜，再加上窗簾，有效阻隔紫外綫和降低室内溫度；另裝有閉路電視和電子保安系統。檔案庫選用優質的密集檔案架，足以儲存逾600公尺的檔案。

興建檔案庫最困難的部分為安裝空調機組。檔案庫儲存區位置的天花原本藏有空調及水管。可想而知，一旦發生水管滲漏或爆裂，會對檔案造成嚴重的破壞，因此我們將整個空調機組安裝到檔案庫的工作區的天花。然而由於工作區天花空間有限，部分組件需利用到檔案庫旁的兩個單位的天花部分。幸得兩個單位的負責人支持，工程才能夠順利完成，使儲存區得以完全免於水患。

In order to preserve the historical records of the University, CUHK established its University Archives in December 2015. Its mission is to systematically collect, organize and preserve university documents that have enduring value. The processing of archives is a complicated task: from appraisal, accession, arrangement, description, conservation, storage, to providing access, each step of the process requires professional archives management knowledge, and in addition, a well-equipped archival repository is essential. Archival records ought to be preserved permanently. Unlike general warehouses, a desirable archival storage environment should attain stable temperature and relative humidity conditions. Hence, where we planned for the university archival repository, careful considerations to site selection, facility planning, and material used were given.

After conducting dozens of records surveys with administrative offices to identify historical records, the University Archives immediately requested a storage space from the University that was sufficient for the need of initial establishment. Although CUHK has the largest university campus in Hong Kong, the academic affairs and research activities are increasing day by day and the needs of space are keen, thus it is not easy to secure a place for the Archives. In 2017, after several months of investigation and discussion, the senior management of the University approved a room of about 82 m² in Tin Ka Ping Building as the archives repository. The room is located near the University Library and central administrative units of the University, which facilitates close communication with offices.

In spite of this, since the location of the repository was used as an office before, the original partition and facilities did not meet the requirements of archives, so a significant modification was necessary. CUHK's Campus Development Office had provided tremendous support in this matter. Colleagues of this office advised on space planning and material used in order to optimize the use of space. They also identified and supervised contractors to ensure all installations could fulfill the requirements. The renovation project began in December 2017 and lasted for about four months until April 2018. The project costs over HK$1 million and the facilities are up to professional standards:  an air handling unit (AHU) which could achieve strict temperature and relative humidity controls and maintain a stable storage environment; a non-sprinkler-type FM200 gas fire extinguishing system; window films plus curtains which can effectively block UV light and lower the room temperature; CCTV monitoring station and electronic security systems. The repository is equipped with high-quality compact shelving, which could accommodate more than 600 linear meters of records.

The most difficult part of the renovation work was the installation of AHU. The ceiling of the storage area of the repository originally contained fan coils and water pipes. It can be imagined that once the water pipes leak or burst, it would cause serious damage to the archives. Therefore, the pipes had to be removed. In order to maximize the space and avoid water damage, the new AHU was installed in the ceiling of the working area of the repository. However, due to the limited ceiling space in the working area, workers have to utilize the ceiling space of the two other units next to the repository in order to carrying out the installation work. Thanks to the support of the heads of the two units, the installation was successfully completed and the storage area is now free from water leakage risk.

The repository will be available for use soon. It will be a resource pool for researchers, administrators, alumni and our students to learn about the establishment, development and achievements of the University. Please visit our website to keep abreast of our latest development.

內地本科生在中大 CUHK’s Mainland Undergraduates

自中國推行改革開放政策後，中大與內地高等院校及學術機構交流日增。早於1980年代，中大已招收內地學生攻讀研究院課程。1997年香港回歸後，中大成立工作小組，與內地院校及有關單位接洽，商討招收內地本科生事宜，最後委託北京大學及上海復旦大學代辦招生，申請人必須已獲該兩所大學錄取。1998年9月，廿八名通過中大代表團面試的新生抵港，成爲首批入讀本港大學的內地本科生。廿八名新生中，十二人入讀工商管理學院，九人入讀工程學院，七人入讀社會科學院。為使新生適應香港的生活，中大安排不少輔導活動，協助他們處理學業及生活事務。書院及學院亦安排新生與教師聚會，使他們認識校內各種服務和設施。中大由2005年開始改變招生方式，通過「全國普通高校統一招生計劃」招收內地本科生。

中大自1998至今已招收逾三千八百名內地學生就讀本科課程，隨著更多的內地生入讀中大，2003年內地本科生成立了香港中文大學內地本科生聯合會，藉著舉辦各式各樣的活動，例如迎新營˴中華文化節等，加強內地生之間的聯繫和支援。

The exchanges between CUHK and mainland universities and research institutes has been growing since China adopted the Open Door Policy and economic reform. Earlier in the 1980s, CUHK had recruited the mainland students for postgraduate study. After the return of Hong Kong in 1997, a working group was set up to make arrangement to recruit undergraduates from the mainland. It was subsequently decided that applicants to CUHK have to be students already accepted for enrolment by either Peking University or Fudan University, who would help with the initial screening process. In September 1998, 28 mainland students, who had passed the interviews conducted by CUHK representatives, arrived in Hong Kong. They were also the first batch of mainland students studying in Hong Kong. Among those 28 students, 12 students had opted to major in the integrated BBA progamme, while the others had chosen to study in the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Social Science. Upon arrival at CUHK, a thorough orientation programme was organized to prepare them for their study and stay in Hong Kong. The Faculties and Colleges had also given them a warm welcome. In 2005 CUHK started to take part in the National Colleges and Universities Enrollment System.

CUHK has admitted over 3,800 mainland undergraduates since 1998. As more of them coming to the University, the mainland students established the Mainland Undergraduate Association (MUA) which aims at strengthening the ties of mainland undergraduates and enhancing communication with the University and the Colleges.

中大酒店及旅遊管理學院二十年 CUHK School of Hotel and Tourism Management – Two Decades of Development

香港作爲全球最受歡迎的旅遊勝地之一，酒店業亦因此蓬勃。有見及此，中大於1960年代已開辦酒店管理的校外進修課程。1998年，為配合本港˴中國˴亞洲乃至世界日益蓬勃的旅遊業發展，中大成立酒店管理學院，開辦酒店管理工商管理學士課程，培訓酒店及相關行業的專業人才。1999年學院錄取首批本科生五十人，收到逾兩千個入學申請；2000年更吸引逾四千人報讀。

學院的教育理論與實務並重，課程内容亦與時並進，例如：於2000年增設哲學碩士和哲學博士課程；2002年酒店管理學院改稱為酒店及旅遊管理學院，增強旅遊管理課程部分；近年亦加入房地產管理的相關課程。實務方面，學院成立之初便設酒店管理咨詢委員會，由業界高層擔任委員，推動課程發展；早期曾與美國康奈爾大學酒店管理學院結成策略聯盟夥伴，開展交換生計劃和教師研究合作。除此之外，每年學生都會被安排到各大酒店，例如半島酒店˴香格里拉酒店˴美國迪士尼等實習，讓學生充分了解和掌握行業的實際運作。矗立在大學港鐵站旁的凱悅酒店，是中大酒店及旅遊管理學院的教學酒店。這所酒店自2011年正式開幕以來，接待不少來自世界各地的遊客，亦為中大同學提供大量的實習機會。學院至今培育超過一千一百名畢業生，在業界樹立良好口碑。

Hong Kong is a popular tourist destination, and the hospitality industry has played a significant role to support the growth of the tourism. Since 1960s, CUHK has offered extramural programmes on hotel operation management. In view of the growing significance of the tourism industry to Hong Kong, mainland China, Asia and the world, the School of Hotel Management was established in 1998 to offer full-time bachelor’s degree programme. In 1999 the School had received over 2,000 applications and recruited its first class of 50 undergraduate students, and in the following year the numbers of application doubled and reached 4,000.

The business education of the School emphasizes both theory and practice, and the modules keep evolving along with the development of the hospitality industry. The School started to provide postgraduate programmes in 2000 and renamed the School of Hotel and Tourism Management in 2002. Recently the curriculum is further expanded to integrate the management of real estate and hospitality assets modules into the programmes. In addition, since its establishment, the School has set up a high-powered advisory committee which comprises leaders and senior executives of hotel chains to provide guidance and promote the programme. The School had also signed a formal student exchange and research collaboration agreement with the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. Each year, the internship programme enables students to gain practical industry experience from famous hotels and hospitality-related companies such as the Peninsula Hong Kong, Shangri-la Group, and Disneyland, US, etc. The Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, which is located next to the University Station, is the teaching hotel of CUHK School of Hotel and Tourism Management. Since its official opening in 2011 the hotel has received a huge amount of tourists from around the world, and at the same time provided excellent training opportunities for CUHK students. Today the School has nurtured over 1,100 competent graduates for the industry.

馬臨教授的珍貴展品 Professor Ma Lin’s Precious Relics on Display

中大第二任校長馬臨教授 (1924-2017) 於2017年10月16日辭世，享年九十三歲。馬校長於1964年加入中大，籌設生物化學系，1973年升任生物化學系首任講座教授，並任理學院院長，1978年出任中大校長，至1987年榮休，服務大學歷二十三年。馬校長於任内完成富爾敦第二次報告書 (1976) 之改革建議，實現大學體制的整合；成立醫學院，使中大更趨全面；又推行暫取新生計劃，檢討課程結構，改用學分制，更首辦哲學博士課程，及進一步發展專業教育。此外，更籌設並成立逸夫書院，爲書院傳統注入新的生命力。

大學展覽廳現設展櫃介紹馬校長生平及其對中大的貢獻，並展出馬校長的手稿、書信、傳記、校長報告書等珍貴展品，以表懷念。

Professor Ma Lin (1924-2017), the second Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, passed away on 16 October 2017, aged 93. Professor Ma joined CUHK in 1964 and helped set up the new Department of Biochemistry.  He was the Founding Chair of Biochemistry in 1973, and then the Dean of Science. In 1978 he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University and steered its development until 1987 when he retired after a service of 23 years. Under Professor Ma’s leadership, CUHK completed the implementation of the recommendations in the second Fulton Report of 1976 as well many other achievements. The Faculty of Medicine was established, the undergraduate programme was reviewed and the Provisional Acceptance Scheme introduced. As well the credit unit system was implemented for the undergraduate curriculum. There was also an expansion of postgraduate programmes to the doctoral level, and the establishment of a reinforced professional education system. The college tradition was further strengthened as well by the establishment of Shaw College.

In memory of Prof. Ma, the University Gallery now has a showcase to introduce Prof. Ma’s life as well as his contributions to the University, and display precious relics such as manuscripts, letters, biography, and the Vice-Chancellor’s reports, etc.

香港中文大學校長鈐章 Seal of the Vice-Chancellor

2018年1月1日，段崇智教授將接任中大第八任校長，而校長就職典禮日期則尚待公佈。按照慣例，典禮其中一個儀式為校董會主席向新任校長頒授校長鈐章。

鈐章由已故新亞書院趙鶴琴先生所刻，文曰「香港中文大學校長之印」，印文為秦篆陽文，銅製，重約一點六公斤，寬長各五點二厘米，高度連鈕共十點五厘米，鈕作鳳鳥形。於1964年校長就職典禮時授與首任校長李卓敏博士，自此成爲傳統。事實上，鈐章自製成以來，從未蓋於任何公函或文件上，只作為校長的象徵信物。

有興趣人士可到大學展覽廳觀賞其複製品。

From 1 January 2018, Professor Rocky S. Tuan would become the eighth Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK, and the date of the Congregation for the Installation of New Vice-Chancellor is yet to be announced. By convention, the Chairman of the Council would present the official seal to the new Vice-Chancellor at the Installation Ceremony.

The seal was designed and engraved by the late Mr. Chao Ho-chin of New Asia College. The artifact bears the Chinese inscription “seal of the Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong”, written in the clerical style of the Qin Dynasty. This cast bronze seal weighs 1.6 kg and measures 5.2 x 5.2 x 10.5 cm. There is a knob carved in the shape of a “Feng”, the mythical phoenix, on top. It was firstly presented to our founding Vice-Chancellor Dr. Choh-ming Li in 1964. In fact, the seal’s imprint has never graced any official document of the University but an emblem of the Vice-Chancellor's authority.

榮譽博士 Honoris Causa

中大於11月30日（星期四）舉行的第八十四屆大會，向五位傑出人士——陳淑良博士（白雪仙）、Arieh WARSHEL教授、周建平博士、利乾先生、利易海倫女士，頒授榮譽博士學位，以表揚他們對促進文化藝術、科研發展、教育及增進人民福祉的傑出貢獻。

榮譽學位頒授已有逾六百年的歷史，最早的記錄可以追溯到1470年代的牛津大學。榮譽學位一般為博士，有時為碩士。根據《香港中文大學條例》規程26〈學位及其他資格頒授〉，大學校董會可建議頒授榮譽碩士學位或榮譽博士學位。不過，中大從未頒授過榮譽碩士學位。

中大的榮譽學位共四類：榮譽法學博士、榮譽文學博士、榮譽理學博士、榮譽社會科學博士。1964年中大首次頒授榮譽學位，之後除了1965、1966、1967年外，每年均會頒授。2013年中大金禧校慶，該年共有九位人士獲頒榮譽博士，為歷届最多。

The Chinese University will confer honorary doctorates (honoris causa) on the five distinguished persons - Dr. CHAN Shuk-leung (alias PAK Suet-sin), Professor Arieh WARSHEL, Dr. ZHOU Jianping, Mr. Chien LEE, and Lady LEE YICK Hoi-lun Helen, at its 84th Congregation to be held on 30 November (Thursday) in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective areas of achievement in cultural and educational progress, scientific research and the promotion of community welfare.

The practice of honorary degree conferment dates back to the Middle Ages, and the earliest record was in the late 1470s conferred by the University of Oxford. The degree is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree. In accordance of “Statute 26 Degree and Other Awards”, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance, the Council may recommended the award of a degree of Master or Doctor honoris causa, but in fact the University has never conferred a Master honoris causa.

Distinguished persons may be awarded one of four types of honorary doctorates: Doctor of Laws (LLD) honoris causa, Doctor of Literature (DLit) honoris causa, Doctor of Science (DSc) honoris causa, and Doctor of Social Science (DSSc) honoris causa. The University held its first honorary degrees congregation in 1964. After a short suspension from 1965 to 1967, since 1968 the University confers honorary doctorates every year. In 2013 CUHK Golden Jubilee, nine persons were awarded honorary doctorates which is a record of the University history.

兆龍樓的昔與今 Sui Loong Pao Building – Then and Now

過去一個月，原分佈於大學本部不同建築物的財務處各單位陸續遷入兆龍樓。最後搬遷的會計組，亦剛於10月24日遷入新址。這棟落成四十年的建築物又有新住戶。

兆龍樓高四層，於1977年底落成，得到著名商人包玉剛爵士捐贈全額建築費共港幣三百餘萬元。中大為感謝包爵士，特以其父包兆龍先生命名此樓。兆龍樓啓用典禮於1978年1月12日舉行，當日林蔭大道上冠蓋雲集，更邀請到時任港督的麥理浩爵士擔任剪綵嘉賓。

兆龍樓早期供工商管理學院和公共事務研究中心等教研單位之用，亦曾是醫學院臨時辦事處所在；1992年成爲教務處及其屬下單位的辦公樓；2014年教務處遷出，2017年成爲財務處的辦公樓。

In the past month, units of the Bursary were busy moving into Sui Loong Pao Building from different places of the Central Campus. The whole removal process was completed on 24 October, when the last unit, Accounting Operations and Systems Unit, moved to this 40-year-old building.

The construction of the four-storey Sui Loong Pao Building was completed in late 1977 with a donation of over HK $3 million from Sir Yue-kong Pao, a renowned businessman. In appreciation of Sir Pao’s generosity, the building was named after his father Mr. Sui Loong Pao. Witnessed by over a hundred honoured guests, Sui Loong Pao Building was officially opened on 12 January 1978 by Lord Murray MacLehose, then Hong Kong Governor.

In the early days Sui Loong Pao Building housed the Faculty of Business Administration and the Public Affairs Research Centre, and used to be the temporary office of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1992 the Building became the Registry office. In 2014 the Registry moved out and in 2017 Sui Loong Pao Building was converted to the Bursary office.
